What is the YMCA Swim Team all about?
We have been a competitive swim team for over 35 years. The team has grown to currently over 50 swimmers ranging in ages of 5-21 years of age.
They compete at district and state levels against other YMCA swim teams in addition to their regular scheduled home and away meets.
What are the requirements to be on the swim team? Minimum requirements for joining the team are:
All members must have an annual membership to the YMCA (in good standing)
Swimmers participate in age groups of 6 and under; 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-21 years of age.
The age group is determined by the child's age as of December 1st.
8 & under swimmers
Swimmers 8 and under should be able to swim the free style (front crawl) at least 25 yards (one length) of the pool using rotary breathing and without stopping to rest.
Swimmers should be able to dive from the side of the pool. Being able to swim the breast stroke and butterfly is helpful but is not a requirement. If swimmersare not able to meet the above requirements they must also be enrolled in swim lessons.
9 & up swimmers
Swimmers 9-12 years old should have the endurance to swim 50 yards (2 lengths or 1 lap) of front crawl and back stroke in the pool without stopping to rest.
Swimmers over 13 must be able to swim 100 yards (four lengths or 2 laps) of the pool without stopping. They must also have the knowledge of how to swim the breast stroke and butterfly. They must be able to dive off the starting blocks.
When does the swim season start and how long does it last?
The YMCA swim team seasons runs from September to mid March. An organizational meeting will be held before the season starts.
Is transportation provided for the out of town meets?
No- It is the Parents responsibility or you may carpool with someone.
Does my child still need to take swim lessons?
It is highly recommended to continue with your swimming lessons to improve your stroke knowledge.
What kind of equipment will be needed to participate?
Practice swimsuit (one piece suit) Team Swimsuit (usually Speedo style) Goggles (recommended 2 pair) Swim Cap (optional but highly recommended) Swim Bag and Towel Warm Up Suits (optional) Membership card with your child's picture on it Padlock to lock up their belongings (optional)
*all swim equipment can be purchased through the YMCA.
How much will the swim season cost me?
The annual YMCA Membership Fee Swim Team Dues per swimmer Meet fees which will be gathered by the YMCA.

Is transportation available from Jacksonville Schools to the YMCA and what will it cost me?
A van or bus can pick the children up and bring them to the YMCA for a daily fee per child.
No transportation will be available on non school days or half school days. Pre Registration and school schedule must be provided. Space is limited so register early.

When are Swim Practices?
Swim Practices are offered Monday thru Friday from 4:00pm-6:00pm.
